Summaries population. They opened their new Muslim cemetery farther from their settlement, on a high hill. István Pánya pp. 97-116 THE ROLE OF THE DANUBE IN THE EARLY MODERN HISTORY OF BAJA AND BÁTMONOSTOR The present day bed of the river Danube is runs between artificial dikes, the course is not identical with the situation some hundreds years ago. What was the setting in the 16-17th centuries, and where was Baja and Bátmonostor located in this period? In my essay I did not try to portray an "original" situation, but to sketch the contemporary geo-environmental circumstances. According to the sources, the main course of the Danube passed directly Baja and Bátmonostor, and the river only moved away from Baja in the early 17th century and from Bátmonostor in the early 19th century. If the environmental factors of the two sites are compared, it is apparent that Baja had better chances as a ferry site, since it was situated on a higher ridge along the river, safe from floodwaters. Besides, Baja was an important local market centre and a remarkable traffic node already in the medieval period. István Pánya pp. 117-140 EARLY MODERN FORTIFIED STOREHOUSES IN BÁCS-KISKUN COUNTY According to the sources, only a limited number, all in all five palisades existed in the territory of today Bács-Kiskun County in the early-modern period. The essay focuses on two edifices built for different purposes: the fortified storehouse at Baja and the so-called ' Vecse' storehouse. First, I discuss the military supply system in the 17-18th centuries, with a special attention to food and fodder, the possibilities of suppliance, and the role of the storehouses. Then, I continue with some interesting episodes from the histories of the two above mentioned storehouses. ETHNOGRAPHY Zsuzsanna Bereznai - Mária Schön pp. 141-162 THE CULT OF THE VIRGIN MARY OF HAJÓS Oral tradition still preserves the story of how the statue of Virgin Mary originally erected in the outskirts of Hajós at the Bussen-hill, was transferred to the village of Hajós. The authors discuss the art historical importance connected to the cult of Mary: the Virgin Mary Square as historical place name, the inner decorations of the Roman Catholic Church at Hajós, the main attraction of the church, the statue of Virgin Mary of Hajós from the Bussen-hill. Then the discussion goes on to the miracles connected to the statue, which is part of the local oral tradition. The folkloristic relations of the Virgin Mary cult are first described through the folk traditions and beliefs connected to the feast day of Virgin Mary. Then, the feasts of the Roman Catholic liturgical year 361
