Etnográfia - Kürti László: Családnevek Lajosmizsén

441 László Kürti A STUDY OF FAMILY NAMES IN LAJOSMIZSE - Summary This article describes family names in the community of Lajosmizse (BácsKiskun county). The author begins with the earliest historical documents, from the fourteenth century, a period followed by the Turkish tax registers. These early sources only mention a few dozen family names (both Christian and family names). Since the seventeenth century the deserted pusztas were claimed by three towns: Jászberény, Kecskemét, and Nagykörös. By analyzing the available family names this article suggests that these settlements easily sent their own settlers who were willing to buy land and move. However, the 1745 date is important: it marks the advancement of the Jászberény residents into the Lajosmizse area thereby fully occupying the empty pastureland. In the XIX. and early XX. centuries, moreover, numerous settlers arrived further polarizing and enriching the family names. What is evidenced from the XIX. century documents is the use of an addition, or third name to distinguish those families whose names were quite common. The article ends by suggesting that these "archaic" names have increasingly been fallen out of favour by the mid-twentieth century.
