D. unearthed in course of salvage excavations. Some of them yielded also objects of other periods. Their animal bone samples are the result of careful collect­ing work, the excavators saved even the tiniest bone fragments, however, they used neither dry of wet sieving techniques. As Table 1 shows the animal bone samples of the seven sites are rather small coming as they do from small-scale salvage excavations. There are only two sites among them (Szabadszállás—Józan and Kun­szállás—Alkotmány Tsz) whose animal bone assem­blage reaches or exceeds the security limit of 500 specimens for quantitative studies. Nevertheless, even they cannot be used for such evaluations because their samples contain several more or less complete animal skeletons (obviously remains of carcasses of animals which died in the settlements and were thrown into the garbage pits) that make it certainly impossible to determine a reliable picture about the frequency and importance of the different species. At the same time, the state of preservation of the animal remains is very good for settlement materials. The samples of the different sites contain altogether 10 incomplete skeletons, 28 whole skulls, larger skull fragments and horn-cores (see Table 2), and 48 whole, measurable long bones (see Table 3).
