Fig. 6. hind leg segment in situ o. kép. A hátulsó végtag in situ állapotban the Period of the Hungarian Conquest. In Hungary such small metacarpals have been found only among the remains of the early Hungarian horses of SzentesBorbásföld. 24 This is also valid for the metatarsal. Of even more importance are the observations concerning the bredthvs. length ratio of the metapodials. Starting out from the metacarpals Brauner divided the horses into five groups on the basis of their slenderness index (the quotient of the smallest diaphysis breadth and the greatest length of the bone). 25 After the 15.3 slenderness index of its metacarpal our horse can be qualified as medium-thick-legged. The 11.89 slenderness index of its metatarsal also puts it into this group. The form of a bone, shows itself the best in the values of the bone characteristic. Bone characteristic calculations were already used in the investigations of extremity bones of cattle (from both different archaename of bone Astragalus (s) Astragalus (d) Calcaneus (s) Calcaneus (d) Table 3 Measurements of the tarsal bones (in mm) greatest length greatest breadth greatest diameter 57.0 58.0 48.5 57.5 58.0 49.0 102.3 48.6 46.7 102.6 48.7 47.0 24 BÖKÖNYI S.: 1974, 539, 551. 25 BRAUNER, A.
