Not many chronicles speak about the development of the people's life in the region between the Danube and the Tisza. There are few T sources available about this. In most cases only the juridical records bear witness to the life of the people. We can follow the order of events in later times only from the records of the guilds, from the leases, or from the sometime council protocols of such country market-towns that Kecskemet used to be. These protocols, written in the 1600's, are kept with solicitous care also in our days. Printing created new situation since the press became chronicler of the everydays. Willy-nilly, it became chronicler of the sprouting workers' movement, of the fight fot the civil rights and of the great turning point in 1944—45 as well. Naturally, this book cannot give full historical review. It is not its task either, since — accoiding to its from — it is a collection of scientific publications. Thus it can give account of the research results of only one period but that is richly presented to the readers. It also proves that the county council is a good supporter and maintainer of the museums in Bacs-Kiskun county though it can perform its role of „Maecenas" only by íelying on the diligent work of the county's people. The county council is right in having undertaken and undertaking this task because this way it does not simply render hommage to the past but also serves the future, the formation of socialist consciousness.
