Fishing on Lake Balaton as the ground for self-realisation

This paper is on the various cultural and psychological motivations of fishing. The fieldwork was made in the region of Lake Balaton as a station of a complex research focusing on the social and cultural interactions between residents, summer-house owners and tourists. In the last century Lake Balaton turned into a region of conflicts about obtaining the possessions of the water and land: building plots, gang-boards, ports and fishery of course. In this complex situation there are no clear borders between fishing within the law or poaching, fishing for sport or recreation, for togetherness or privacy. Furthermore there is a special component in this complex motivation-system and identity construction of the sportings of Lake Balaton. It may be interpreted as a very local Balaton-identity compiled of traditional ideas on reedy, wind, wave, colour of water, spits, temper of native fishes, a number of secret methods and handmade utensils.
