Celebration of nature and natural phenomena A substantial part of the past religion and cult practices could have been derived from the astronomic knowledge. The inner area of the rondel was most probably the place of celebrations and rituals in those days, when the entry of the Moon and Sun was expected to happen in the rondel's entrances (Fig. 16-17). Rondel orientated in such a way very well corresponds with assembly, ritual, economic and political functions as well as with the necessity of a precise measurement of time. This enabled the Neolithic man to observe the course of the rainfall during the year, the onset of dry or cold periods or periodic flooding of major rivers due to the melting snow and thus influenced a decision about the best time of spring sowing (Karlovskÿ — Pavúk 2002,122; Pavúk - Karlovskÿ 2004, 259-260). Other inhabitants of the settlement or the nearby surrounding probably took part of the common actions aimed at the worship and celebration events, which were caused by the periodic changes of major celestial bodies (Karlovskÿ — Pavúk 2002, 124; Pavúk — Karlovskÿ 2004, 259). 73
