(Darwiií-Thomas 2001). This argument is relevant even if one exclusively considers the rondels of the Lengyel complex (Biehl 2010). There are two approaches basically: the immediate, functional approach on the one hand (fortified earthworks), and the indirect functional approach (including sacral and gathering places, burial sites, and calendar buildings as well). Most of the researchers accept the interpretation as sacral and gathering, social places which includes aspects of a rondel not only in a material way (as a monumental structure), but also features of the function of a Neolithic society (e.g. communal rites taking place in the rondels) (Petrasch 2012). A research team incorporating experts of several institutes and disciplines founded in 2011 by the leadership of Balaton Museum research expressly the Neolithic circular ditches in Zala County. The research program studies Neolithic rondels in their natural environment, looking at them as man-made landscape shaping phenomena in a complex way. Past skyscapes together with their characteristic and conspicuous atmospheric and astronomical phenomena are considered an organic part of the concept of landscape. In addition it also evaluates the role the rondels played in the Neolithic settlement network.
