Czigány Dezső: Nevető önarckép / Dezső Czigány: Laughing Self Portrait (1912-1914) who was awarded several times, was often char­acterized as an artist who hesitates between the (conservative) Art Gallery of Budapest and the moderns. Aladár Bálint wrote the following about the artist in the Nyugat: “Mannheimer would be an impressionist, but at the back of his mind, he is attracted to Makart and cocks his eye at the gates of the academies of Wien. In order to hide these inner hesitations he creates ambiguous - so called moody - painting. To be an academic painter - concerning a better interpretation of the word - he is not disciplined enough and to be an impressionist - although overduly - he is not brave enough.” Marcell Nemes also purchased more works of Lajos Márk (1867-1942) who was a student of Hollósy and Bourguereau and an outstanding illustrator and caricaturist as well.
