Pest Szabolcs Rosta New results in the research of Cuman territory between rivers Danube and Tisza The study exams the 13 t h —16 t h century history of settlements in Cumania Minor, in geographical sense: the Kiskunság Sand Plateau. This territory used to be the largest area of settlement of Cumans who moved here after the Mongolian invasion. We do not know much on the history of settlement of this territory, because of poor research and small amount of written sources generally characteristic for this age. The basis for the work started in the recent years is made by collection of data collected according to new, unified aspects. The main elements of this work are field survey and use of 18 t h-19 t h century maps. With the development of digital technique we got a possibility of better use of old maps. In this way we can reconstruct Medieval system of roads. Also with the help of the maps we were able to identify 43 Late Mediaeval churches. After the analysis of the data already at our disposal, we could map 85 Medieval sites with churches. Their systematic survey has been already done. Catalogue of Medieval sites gave an answer to several questions connected with the history of the region. We were able to outline the stable system of settlements of the Late Medieval Period, characterised by the co-existence of Cuman administrative system and that of the counties. Beside that some features show the continuos transformation of the settlement system. Some of them resulted great changes. On this basis we can separate some phases of the settlement history in Cumania Minor. The most unknown time is the early Cumanian period. Examining it, historical sources are of no help. There are no any data for the 35 settlements connected with Cumans on the territory of the Csertán-szék nothing is mentioned in the written sources until the mid-14 l h century. In the analysis of the early settlement system we can use mainly archaeology and linguistics. On the basis of the results, an interesting early system of settlement starts to be outlined. According to it, a much more closed system can be suggested in the case of Cuman settlements, than it was earlier suggested. 204
