I am working, hoping and trusting. 1 am trying to defeat selfishness in myself, so that I can love more fully. You are always and now as well my greatest hope and support. ’ His portrait in Kecskemét, which can also be considered as a study head, is very simple, stressing the point, realistic; still there is some overtone, a mixture of sensual and emotional, left in it. Mednyánszky shows from a little bit down, on close inspection the Hungarian peasant face having wide cheek bones and almost Asian features, in monumentality like a block. The representation almost pushes out the limits of the portrait. The representation of the peasants went on in the vagrant paintings. Mednyánszky’s diving among the people who live on the periphery of big towns can be seen from the outside as well, so it was not surprising when the contemporary newspapers found pleasure in writing about the eccentric figure of the painter in detail: ‘Anyone who sees him walking along the Váci Street with one of his relatives will stop. What a man! He is like the man, Christ! He has long beard, his tears often fall on it, high forehead, which is kissed brightly by pain, and his eyes which cry for others. He rarely wears elegant suits but most of the time he is in the most impossible clothes. He looks like a Russian mystical fan! Possibly some fine lady is on his side.
