Kalocsa JÓZSEF FINTA Mike Tóth, editor of Catholic periodicals A Jesuit who spent most of his life in the city of Kalocsa, Mike was a formidable personality both in the science and the religious life of Hungary in the late 19th and early 20th century. He made contributions of lasting value to a number of areas: besides mineralogy, photography, astronomy and architecture, literature was also among his passions. He edited two pious periodicals through decades - the present paper is a brief description of these journals. Promoting respect for the Heart of Jesus has always been a priority for Jesuits. In Hungary, the most important device for this was the journal the title of which translates as ‘Harold of the Holy Heart of Jesus’. This periodical was founded in 1867 and Mike Tóth became its editor in 1884. He was to remain in this office until 1917 and during the 33 years of his editorship the journal developed into an organ of national importance. The other religious periodical, The Virgin Mary’s Flower Garden, was perhaps even more closely associated with Mike Tóth, since he himself was its founder and remained its editor through 32 years, from 1885 till 1917. Besides propagating respect for the Virgin Mary, its aim was to acquaint readers more deeply with the life of Hungarian saints and confessors and also to foster a deep-felt sense of Hungarian national identity and Hungarian religiosity. While browsing through these magazines it is worth thinking just how much our society, and within that the life and religious practice of a small city, have changed over the past hundred years. We can also ask ourselves whether this change has had an entirely beneficial effect on today’s young generation. 20
