Rosta Szabolcs - Lichtenstein László: Egy szarmata telep a 2-3. század fordulóján

ARCHAEOLOGIA CUMANICA 1 Szabolcs Rosta - László Lichtenstein Sarmatian settlement at Kiskunhalas Between February 5th and March 19th 2004 a rescue excavation was conducted in Kiskunhalas, in connection with construction works of a Tesco store. The works were in progress and we had to provide continuity to them. So, the archaeological activity had to be finished in an extremely short period. In return we got the opportunity to examine all the territory for the buildings and devices of the store, a total of 55,000-sq.m. During the six weeks of the concentrated rescue excavation we researched a 14,000-sq.m large territory. The excavation included different, separate pieces of land, because using the opportunity of research at any territories beside the already demolished one - we opened 3 large sectors and made several small test trenches and 3 large test areas connected to the sectors. A total of 260 features were uncovered on the excavated territory. Only 11 of them belonged to recent centuries or could not be identified and 249 features belonged to the Sarmatian Age. Territorial spread of features of different types was uneven. For example, in section I beside 34 ditches, only 13 pits (the age of most of them could not be identified) were found, and at the same time in section III 124 granary pits were uncovered, but no ditches at all. Settlement units could be well separated, and no superpositions were observed. Judging from these facts we suppose that the settlement in question existed only for a short time. This is supported by the homogeneous character of the both Barbarian and Roman imported pottery. Roman find material can be dated to the period between 180 and 230/240. In the Barbarian pottery material, shapes determined as Dacian features in the material of the Újhartyán settlement can be met. Sarmatian settlement found in Kiskunhalas and placed to the turn of the 2nd/3rd centuries is analogous with settlement parts excavated in Kompolt-Kistér, Gyoma and Újhartyán, that - according to the present research - considered to be the „earliest" horizon. 102
