MUNICIPAL ARCHIVES - County Archives (Regional, general public archives) by Csaba Káli
The heraldic roots of Viktor Chernél, 1898 ( The Archives of Vas County ) example for the strength of centralizing intentions for hiding historical roots and the lack of stores is the case of Archives of Békés County. In this case the county archives can be found in the town of Gyula, in the seat from before the year of 1950 and not in the present seat, in Békéscsaba. So for this reason in a lot of settlements so called branch archives were formed together with county archives, which are usually in the seats of the counties. These branch archives are also called departments or sections and their towns are usually old, which have long past and significant and important archival material. From this point of view the most interesting is the Archives of Csongrád County that has four branch archives or sections beside the centre in the town of Szeged, in the old seats of the county and in other towns. (Like Hódmezővásárhely, Szentes, Makó, Csongrád) Branch archives are so usual that today most of the county archives, twelve out of twenty keep documents in other places than the county seats. Even the luckier archives, where the conditions are better, keep their material in different separate stores in the settlement. The year of 1968 brought new decisive changes in the life of county archives. The institutions having maintainedby the state so far got under the maintenance of competent county councils (authorities) from 1 st January. The professional and political guidance was taken over by the cultural department of town councils. Just certain elements of the professional supervision remained in the A 1UNIC1PAL ARCHIVES
