The Museum of the Library or the Library of the Museum? A Central European History with Hungarian Examples

The study principally examines the connection of the library and the museum in a historical perspective, and also in the perspective as to how the public collection should be administratively maintained today, what can be combined with what, and how it can be made more useful as a single institute for today's society. It sets off from the development of collecting concepts, i.e. from the process in which, from the Middle Ages up to the 18th century, the depository of the collected artefacts were called in various ways: treasury, library, studiolo, Kunstkammer, gallery, and museum. The historical lesson is that the combined, or divided, public collections work well if these administrative changes follow an internal, professional logic and the historically created frameworks. If it is vice versa, and these issues are reduced to an administrative matter, it is mostly followed by degradation and destruction instead of organic building. Technological changes have not overwritten this truth, either.
