Állampolgársági és névváltoztatási iratok a Magyar Nemzeti Levéltárban Eszter Vass CITIZENSHIP AND NAME CHANGE DOCUMENTS IN THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF HUNGARY The name change records from 1933 and the years 1938-2004 preserved by the National Archives of Hungary (NAH) form an almost complete series, while the records of the years 1897-1932 and 1934-1937 on similar subjects have been largely destroyed. It is possible, however, that materials related to name changes from the missing years can be found in the county archives of the NAH, as well as in the competent independent municipal archives. Documents relating to name change cases prior to 1897 can be searched for in person or by proxy at the Central Archives of the NAH and at the competent county and municipal archives. The name change case files held by the Central Archives of the NAH include the name change decision on the basis of which the name change certificate was issued and the annexes related to the case. A certified copy of the name change decision or, in justified cases, of the entire file may be requested if eligibility is proven. Name change documents after 2004 are kept by the Government Office of Budapest Capital City, while the records of name change cases closed after 1 April 2015 are kept for three years by the competent civil registry office. 261
