ÁDÁM S OMORJAI OSB CHANGES IN ECCLESIASTICAL JURISDICTION IN THE STATE TERRITORIES NORTH OF THE DANUBE REGAINED CZECHOSLOVAK CONTROL, 1945–1949 Based on Vatican documents József Mindszenty was informed by his vical general in Czechoslovakia two weeks after he has taken possession of his see in Esztergom, 2nd October 1945, that the Holy See, by letter of the Internuntiature in Prague - after authorization of Mons Tardini of the Holy Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs -, has taken away the jurisdiction on the territories of the Esztergom Archdiocese belonging politically again to Czechoslovakia, i. e. the major part of his Arch dio -cese. He has protested in the Vatican and the protest was repeated twice: personally and with a letter drawn and dated in Rome. He was informed that the Holy See does not want to change the boundaries of his Archiocese. Mindszenty did not give up and has written one letter in 1946, four letters in 1947. In one of his letters, he threatened with his resignation. The respective documents found in the Archives of the Holy Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs are published first in this essay. This correspondence preceded his six letters from the American Embassy of Budapest, and, again, two letters from Pazmaneum, Vienna, after 1971.
