A reformáció és magyarországi öröksége - Schramek László: II. József türelmi politikájának érvényesülése Pest megyében (1781-1789)
LÁSZLÓ S CHRAMEK THE IMPACT OF THE EDICT OF TOLERATION AND JOSEPH II’S CHURCH POLICY IN PEST COUNTY (1781–1789) Protestants in Pest County found themselves in a controversial situation during the first eight decades of the 18th century. Church and secular authorities made it more difficult to practice religion with restrictive decrees and destroying churches. However, due to the internal migration in the country, many new evangelical congregations were established. Joseph II’s Edict of Toleration, issued in October 29, 1781, repealed lots of restrictive regulations. The General Assembly of Pest County delayed the implementation of the edict until the summer of 1782. Subsequently, many Protestant communities have been granted permission to build a church and employ pastors and teachers. The conflicts between Protestant communities and secular authorities did not cease. This was due to the fact that many Protestant communities refused to pay the services of the Catholic parson (payment in cash or in kind). In such cases, the county authority enforced the law. II.
