Habsburgok és Magyarország a kiegyezést követően Monika Kozári The relationship between the leaders of the Deák Party and Liberal Party, and the Habsburg Court The first political leaders after the compromise between Austria and Hungary were all born in the first half of the 19. century. They took is for granted - regardless of their social class - that Hungary is part of the Habsburg Empire, and its constitutional form is kingdom, with Habsburg kings in power for nearly 300 years. Hungary has never been a republic before and the idea of republic didn’t have a social basis or supporters among those who could form politics at that time. The freedom fight and the lessons of 1850s have proved to Franz Joseph that he could not break the Hungarians, and the empire didn’t have sufficient funds to maintain an oppressing state. With the compromise between Austria and Hungary they have created the foundation of bourgeois development in Hungary. The dualist Austro-Hungarian Monarchy remained one of Europe’s five leading power, one of the world’s leading state. Hungarians had desired a „national king” for centuries, and they got one in Franz Joseph’s person. 38
