DISSOLVING OF THE WORKERS' MILITIA. UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT TO SURVIVE: On 29th January 1957 the Executive Committee of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party established the Workers' Militia, which actually became the army of the party. Over the decades most people accepted this organization. Later when the socialist system started to fade, more and more people protested its existence. Despite the growing attacks most of the force remained together, moreover, they expected stronger defence from the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party. As a result of the progresses within the party on 8th May 1989 the Central Committee placed the Workers' Militia under the supervision of the Cabinet. The leaders of the Militia believed that the organisation would be needed in the future too, so they were making plans for the reorganisation with feverish haste. Until the beginning of October 1989, the leaders were almost sure of its future.

However, after some days they could not help realizing that the activities of the organisation would soon end. The situation was made clear on 4th and especially on 16th October by the decision of the Cabinet. On 20th October 1989 the Parliament passed a bill regarding the dissolving of the Workers' Militia without a legal successor.

„ A Munkásőrség működésére, illetve további sorsára vonatkozóan a testületen belül is felütötte fejét a bizonytalanság." — mondta Borbély Sándor, a Munkásőrség országos parancsnoka 1989. szeptember 19-én, az összevont osztályvezetői és megyei parancsnoki értekezleten. A parancsnok kulturális szintjét is tükröző — némi nyelvi képzavarral párosított — helyzetértékelés többé-kevésbé pontosan tükrözte a megroggyant Munkásőrségen belüli bizonytalanságot, hiszen ekkorra már senki sem tudta a testületben, mi lesz az egykor hatalmas „párthadsereg" sorsa. Csupán azt érzékelték, hogy nagy a baj, s reménykedtek a kormány őket támogató tagjaiban. A Munkásőrség leszűkült stratégiája is erre utal: „higyjünk [!] abban, amit teszünk, higyjünk [!] egymásban, és aki erre nem képes és meghátrál, az álljon fel, és ne terheljen tovább bennünket."1

A Munkásőrséget2 több évtizedes fennállása során szép lassan megszokták az emberek. Nap mint nap lehetett látni tagjainak kékesszürke egyenruháját, hiszen nem csupán a pártbizottságok őrizetét bízták rájuk, hanem, ha kellett, a
