38 Fazekas István A FORGOTTÉN WORK OF MÁRTON GYÖRGY KOVACHICH, „MONUMENTA DIPLOMATICA BATTHYANIANA" István Fazekas The enormous manuscript collection of Márton György Kovachich can be found in the manuscript section of the National Széchényi Library. The Monumenta diplomatica Batthyaniania is among those few works which can be found in another collection, the Körmend archive of the princely Batthyány family, which is preserved in the Hungárián National Archives. Already in 1802, Kovachich noticed the rieh holdings of the Batthyány family archive. Yet only in 1814, while collecting historical sources on the county militia (banderia), did he gain access to the well-endowed, but carefully guarded archive's public materials. In November and December of 1814 he made copies of documents relating to public affairs, and also assembled the above-mentioned manuscript, by which its Compiler sought to enhance the fame of his family. The value of the signed volume containing 316 documents is enhanced by the fact that the medieval part of the Memorabilia series, which served as the basis of the work, disappeared in World War II. Thus, researchers lacking the Originals were obliged to rely upon the summaries compiled by Béla Iványi. The manuscript of Kovachich reproduces the complete text of 148 of the 224 documents of the Memorabilia series known to Iványi. A copy of the manuscript may be found in the Archdiocesan Library in Zagreb.
