Föglein Gizella THE NATIONAL ARMS OF THE HUNGARIAN REPUBLIC (1946-1949) Gizella Föglein The purpose of the study is to reveal the conditions relevant to the national arms of Hungary as a republic. The author exhibits and analyses thereby all those opinions, proposals and drafts that were emerged and vocalised at various forums, thus before the parliament, at the Prime Minister's office, in the Ministry of the Interior, at the Legal Reform Committee of the Government and, at the office of the President of the Republic, respectiviely, with regard the national arms. As a result of several months' preparations and disputes the so called "Kossuth" arms was selected, the smaller arms without the crown, emphasizing the national character and republican ideas — as continuation of the democratic traditions and insignia of 1848—1849. The author studied both the political and the heraldic history of the national arms of the Hungarian Republic of 1946 and she used archival materials never searched before.
