Results of the survey about the research habits in the National Archives of Hungary (NAH) in 2016

The 46 research rooms of NAH are visited by 7-8 thousand researchers every year. To help to designate the archival strategy and to develop the services, a very democratic way was chosen. The public opinion was measured in a form of an online survey, which was published in the autumn of 2015. The surveys aim was to evaluate the performance of the research service of the NAH.

More than 900 researchers filled out the survey. The study provides information on the social composition of the respondents, types, aims, time periods of their archival research, and local and temporal research characteristics. It collected opinions about opening hours, reprographic services, even opinions about the cultural programmes were collected and analysed. In addition, respondents could rate the infrastructure of reading rooms and write their own ideas about future developments in archival sector.

To sum up the survey: researchers were unsatisfied with the IT infrastructure (complications with Wi-Fi registration or lack of it, quality and quantity of computers) and they want more digitized content online - especially parish registers. Furthermore, they wish to have less law restrictions to access the civil registers from the 20th century.
