774 1921 No. 767. 347/res.pol. Notes of the Unofficial Representative of the Hungarian Government, Count Szapáry, concerning an interview with the Czechoslovak Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Benes. [TRANSLATION] PRAGUE, August 24, 1921. Having been informed at the end of July that Dr. Benes would like to see me, I came from Franzensbad to Prague to call on him.

1 His first question was whether the attitude of the Czech Press towards the Marienbad conversations had created a good impression in Hungary. He particularly wanted to know whether Count Bánffy was satisfied with the statement that the anti-Hungarian character of the Little Entente had become less pronounced in consequence of the Marienbad meeting. I replied that the statement did create a good impression, but that a section of the Czech Press continued to attack Hungary and the Hungarian Government. The conversation continued as follows:

2 Szapáry : "Au fond, vous avez été très méchant pour nous à Marienbad. Le comte Bánffy était très réservé dans sa réponse donnée à l'interpellation et pas du tout aggressif, ce à quoi il aurait eu le droit. Mais dites-moi, Monsieur le Ministre, qu'avez-vous de nouveau comploté contre nous à Marienbad avec MM. Pasic et Take Jonescu?" Benes: "Voulez-vous que je vous le dise franchement? Eh bien, nous allons discuter les mesures à prendre si votre Charles revient et je vous dis franchement que je proposerai de demander de suite au Gouvernement hongrois son extradition, de manière que s'il est seulement trois jours en Hongrie, le Gouvernement hongrois devra nous le remettre ou nous l'expédier à une frontière quelconque. Cette question, en principe, nous l'avons déjà réglée entre nous. Il faut seulement discuter la manière de l'exécuter."
