840 1921 ports of arms by Austrian communists to the Styrian frontier, our gendarmerie in Western Hungary was reinforced on August 6 by one and a half battalions, in order to reassure and protect the population. 1 Chancellor Schober was immediately informed of this by Mr. Masirevich, who added that we have no demonstrative or antiAustrian intentions whatsoever, our gendarmerie merely being intended to secure public order until the transfer takes place. 2 The Italian General Ferrario, however, in the name of the Commission of Allied Generals entrusted with the transfer of Western Hungary, demanded the immediate withdrawal of our gendarmerie reinforcement, especially of the troops of Colonel Prónay and Major Ostenburg. 3 Upon our denial, based on the above-mentioned reasons, he promised to send a detailed report to the diplomatic representatives of the Allies in Budapest, 4 and to Paris. You are therefore requested, if the question should be raised, to add to our above-mentioned reasons and to emphasize specially the fact that the reinforcements were notified to the Allied Mission in Budapest and that they had approved the fact that we had the right to a gendarmerie reinforcement which was only intendéd to secure public order and the undisturbed transfer of the territory. Colonel Prónay is not there at the moment, but only two weak companies. Major Ostenburg has three companies, and any disturbance is out of the question. We have no other gendarmerie reserve troops, so that we could only send those. 5 No. 733. 4564/pol.
