1921 65 No. 59. 384/pol. The Hungarian Chargé d'affaires in Vienna, Mr. Masirevich, to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Gratz. [TRANSLATION] Code telegram No. 23. VIENNA, January 23, 1921. The statements of Your Excellency referring to Western Hungary 1 were not favourably received here. From my conver­sation with an influential member of the Foreign Office and with other Austrian politicians, I got the impression that they hold the declarations in question to be tdb strong and even to a certain degree aggressive. To this I replied that anyone who knows Your Excellency and your intentions can have no doubt that such a view of your statements is absolutely mistaken. I hear that Dr. Mayr issued the communiqué relating to this matter which appeared in the newspapers under pressure from the deputies, and chiefly Dr. Gunther, who for the most part emphasize the point of view of res judicata.' 1 No. 60. 386/pol. Answer to code telegram No. 13: 3 I consider it a very good idea to invite Prince Sapieha to Budapest through our representative in Paris; in view, however, of the contents of yesterday's code telegram No. io 4 Mr. Praz­novszky should be given fairly wide freedom to act, so that he may resort to the "sondage" only if the atmosphere in Paris is not too much opposed to such a visit.
