The Hungarian Delegate to the Interallied Mission for Western Hungary, Baron Villani, to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Count Somssich. [TRANSLATION] Code telegram No. 2. SOPRON, March 5, 1920. Counsellor Neugebauer and Secretary of Legation Hauenschild, delegates of the Austrian Government, arrived last Thursday in Sopron. About 5000 people awaited them. The crowd was in a grim and bitter mood. When the train arrived, there was a noisy demonstration against annexation, after which they sang the national hymn. The Austrians were officially welcomed by a Hungarian officer attached to the Interallied Mission and by three chief police officers. The Austrian officials were accompanied to their hotel by a police escort to protect them against possible attack. In fact there was an assemblage before the Hôtel Pannónia which was dispersed by mounted police. The police acted swiftly and tactfully. Troops also were held in readiness in case of necessity. The Mayor 1 and I expressed our regrets to the Austrians on account of the demonstrations. Their residence is constantly guarded and we have taken proper measures to protect their safety. The Mayor today issued a proclamation to the people requesting that the Austrian delegates should be regarded as 1 Thurner.
