Germany's Foreign Military Missions in the Light of Arguments and Numbers In the field of security policy, Germany is widely perceived as a country which rather reluctantly engages itself in international conflicts and crises. The present paper aims to analyse this perception in the light of the arguments surrounding this question, as well as the numbers: how many soldiers does Germany send to foreign military missions in the context of the UN, NATO and EU? The paper gives a brief overview of the history of Germany's "Auslandseinsätze", touches upon relevant theoretical frameworks which try to pinpoint where and when Berlin should engage itself in the world, and then goes on to compare the number of soldiers Germany and the other four major EU countries (France, Italy, Spain and the UK) send abroad for peacekeeping or training purposes. The numbers show that the perception of Berlin as a reluctant ally is somewhat unfair: German soldiers are active in significant numbers, often surpassing the other four countries. Overall, Germany does itself a disservice with its overcautious and somewhat sceptical attitude towards foreign military interventions, because it overshadows its undeniably important contributions to international peace and security. 2014. tavasz 87
