Résumé A Contribution to the Diplomatic History of the Vogeler Case, 1949-1951 The article focuses on some hitherto unaddressed details and aspects of the US- Hungarian negotiations on releasing Robert Vogeler, mainly relying on US and Hungarian archival sources. After examining the initial efforts by Acheson's State Department and the US Minister in Budapest, Nathaniel R Davis, to secure Vogeler's release, including Davis's first meeting with Mátyás Rákosi, the piece analyses the preparations by both sides for the expulsion of US diplomats following Vogeler's trial. The paper goes on to explore the failed US endeavour to appeal to the USSR to facilitate Vogeler's release citing the case of Valentin Gubitchev, a Soviet officer arrested and tried in the Judith Coplon case in the United States. After discussing the Voice of America frequency issue, the Hungarian non-attempt to demand the Holy Crown in return for Vogeler, and the US effort to involve Soviet General Vladimir P. Sviridov into the settlement, the article concludes that the Truman government basically regarded the Vogeler case as a source of irritation concentrating on possible consequences in US domestic politics, while the Hungarian steps were most probably driven by Rákosi's personal prestige considerations rather than direct orders from the Kremlin. 2013. tavasz 171
