Résumé Friends without a Coalition: Support for the Eastern Partnership in the European Union and the prospects of the initiative The Eastern Partnership initiative of the European Union has emerged as the flagship project for the eastern dimension of neighbourhood policy. At the same time, the initiative still lacks an internal coalition, members of which could push for legitimate and moderate goals that would consolidate its place in the community institutional architecture. The paper surveys the positions of interested member states and supranational agents to sketch out the problems hampering the emergence of a consensus among "friends" of the initiative that would ensure the Eastern Partnership more secure funding and a clear cut set of goals - increasing thus the incentive it represents for partner states. It is argued that the current state of affairs is the consequence of interested actors having failed to properly measure the possibilities of building a coalition around mutually acceptable preferences and goals, and concludes by suggesting a middle of the way approach acceptable for partners and most member states alike. 134 Külügyi Szemle
