Résumé Résumé Fiction or Reality: Postmodern Wars on the Television Screen and the Unusual Case of Jessica Lynch The article examines the 'story' of Jessica Lynch based on Jean Baudrillard's theory of hiperreality, one of the most controversial postmodern cultural theorists. The 'story' was (re)presented and (re)narrated almost at the same time in Western news channels, in a BBC documentary and in a Hollywood movie - framing the blond, 19-year-old American girl as a 'war hero' of the Iraq war in 2003. Through her tale it will become visible how the Western liberal power of the United States in waging war attempts to legitimate its war policy, to mobilize its society and to configure and channel the war discourse through the 'media-machine' by relying on diverse techniques and instruments. It will also be illustrated how through the operation of the media the elements of the 'real' and the 'fictitious' intermingle resulting in the emergence of hyperreality with complex and often contradictory phenomena diverting liberal power from its originary goals. 136 Külügyi Szemle
