Résumé Résumé "Islands in the Current": Foreign Policy Research and Foreign Policy Making in Hungary Think tanks, university departments, and NGO-s engaged in different domains of international relations are relevant actors in foreign policy making worldwide. Hungary, however, lags seriously behind in this respect not only in comparison with the trend- settler United States and the leading EU members, but also compared to some Central European countries. In fact, foreign policy research and foreign policy implementation contitute basically separate circuits in Hungary, interaction between the two being more incidental than systematic. The intellectual contribution of research institutes would be instrumental in reinforcing strategic thinking in foreign policy planning, decision making as well as in the overall conduct of Hungarian diplomacy. The professional intercourse between think tanks and leading analysts makes up an influential international network which can be a helpful tool in making specific Hungarian foreign policy considerations and viewpoints better understood. Building synergy entails systematic consultations, information flow, personal and institutional interaction between "official" foreign policy and the sphere of think tanks in Hungary. At the same time, researchers themselves are bound to soften their academic profile in order to make their analysis more practice-oriented and better suited to the special needs of concrete Hungarian foreign policy action. 2010. nyár 15
