With regard to the fact that no real political change took place in Serbia, no mutually beneficial relations could be established with the Serbian political elite; in reality, the situation further deteriorated after the Kalashnikov-scandal was made public. The Hungarian government attempted to operate cautiously afterwards, and though it expressed its sympathies regarding the aspirations of the Croats and the Slovenes, it followed the power politics of the great European powers in its Southern Slav policy. Nevertheless, the Hungarian-Serbian relations remained cool until the fall of Miloseviae in 2000 due to the behavior of the Serbian leadership. However, Hungary was able to establish good neighborly relations with Croatia and Serbia, which were underlined by the agreements concerning the protection of the minorities and the basic treaties. Though there were some minor troubles from time to time, the bilateral relations were basically favorable. Hungary succeeded in putting the relations on a new basis with Serbia after the fall of 2002, and this was facilitated to a large degree by the multi-sided support which the Hungarian government had extended to the former Serbian opposition.
