6 May 22, 1964 Cistercian Abbot at Mount Laurel MOUNT LAUREL—The life of a Cistercian Monk centers on the liturgy—on the daily singing of the Divine Office. This is the summation of Abbot Nivardo Buttarazzi, S.O.Cist., of Casamari, Italy, visiting the community’s only house in the United States, Our Lady of Fatima Monastery here. Abbot Nivardo was born in 1907 near the community’s motherhouse at Casamari, and entered the seminary at the age of 12. He began his novitiate in 1923, and was ordained July 3, 1932, in Rome, remaining in the Eternal City to complete his theological studies. He earned his doctorate in sacred theology in 1934. Returning to the motherhouse, Fr. Nivardo was assigned as a teacher of theology in the Cistercians’ seminary there, and subsequently became prior of the monastery. In 1941, at the age of 34, Fr. Nivardo was chosen abbot, and because of his youth, required a special dispensation from the Holy See to assume his duties. He was unanimously reelected in 1959 for another 18-year term. Abbot Nivardo is on his official canonical visit to Our Lady of Fatima Monastery, and while in the United States also will visit the two other Cistercian monasteries, at Our Lady of Spring Bank, Wisconsin, and Our Lady of Dallas, Texas. These two monasteries, while of the same community, are not under the jurisdiction of Casamari. During World War II, the motherhouse at Casamari was occupied by the Germans. Following the war, the communists took over monasteries and imprisoned priests and religious throughout Eastern Europe. Italy had a big Communist Party, and there was fear that the communists would be able to take over even in that Catholic country. To provide for this eventuality, Abbot Nivardo began planning the establishment of monasteries of the order outside the possible red area of influence, and he turned his attention to North and South America. The Abbot was in the United States in 1961, when he visited Bishop George W. Ahr in Trenton to accept His Excellency’s invitation to establish the monastery in the Diocese of Trenton. While here now, he will discuss plans for expansion of the monastery with Fr. John Paolucci, S.O.Cist., prior of Our Lady of Fatima. Abbot Nivardo has under his jurisdiction 18 monasteries, 12 in Italy, two in Africa, and one each in the United States and Brazil. He declared that Our Lady of Fatima Monastery must be developed and completed before he will begin planning other installations in the United States. At present there are four priests in the local community and two more will be sent from Italy. In Africa, the Cistercians have a minor seminary, and now have 50 professed members of the order, 25 of them priests. The Africans are sent back to Europe for their theological training. The monastery in Brazil, which is near Sao Paolo, how has eight priests and 12 brothers. A church is under construction there and will be completed next year. Abbot Nivardo pointed out that during a visit there, he noted that the old church, a mud structure with grass roof, was in a precarious condition, and ordered the priests to begin construction of a new building. They had completed the basement level of the new building when a fierce storm demolished the old church. At Mount Laurel, work has begun on an addition to the monastery which will provide four more rooms, a new chapel and refectory. The chapel will seat some 40 persons. The additional bedrooms will provide for a total of 10 priests in the new community, and the refectory will provide dining facilities for the monks. A religious goods store will be included in the new wing, and the old building, an old farmhouse, will be used for administrative offices as well as living quarters. The Cistercians follow the Rule of St. Benedict, and were founded in 1098 at Citeaux, France. In the year 1152, the abbey at Casamari was taken over by the Cistercians, and a new abbey, the one still in use, was built in 1203. The cornerstone was set by Pope Innocent III. Casamari lies near Monte Casino, about 65 miles from Rome. In 1217, Pope Honorius III consecrated the abbey church. The Trappists were founded only 70 years ago during the reign of Pope Leo XIII, and observe a vow of silence, dedicating their entire lives to prayer and work inside the monastery. The Cistercians, however, who do not take such vows, are engaged in apostolic work in parishes, conducting retreat houses and the like; but their work is limited to permit full participation in the spiritual phase of their life, which includes a daily High Mass and the chanting in choir of the Divine Office.
