Ü Ielefon: EX 4-9523 ^ f I The parental home — or the lack of it, constitutes the deciding factor of juvenile delinquency Written by ANDREW IRSHAY. The American Home was known for generations past as the place where manhood and womanhood developed under care and guidance. Children did not just grow up. they were brought up by God-fearing parents- And it mattered little, or not at all, whether or not these homes were humble, or poverty stricken; the environment was such that mental ^ and moral giants developed in them. Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Webster, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Jane Adams, Henry Ford, Herbert Hoover, Walter Chrysler, and many others, too numerous to mention contributed to the luster of tjne name America. What has happened to our communities, to our homes and to our sense of values in our present day? Some will say that times have changed. This is a false assertion. If anything has changed, it is our moral, spiritual and individual concept of life in general. Time goes on and on, but we come and go, never again to return. And we delude ourselves in our thinking that what was right and honorable in Lincoln's day is no longer our concern. .We are looking for explanations rather than for the eternally true principles to follow such as: honesty, brotherliness, truth and faith in God. Homes deteriorate into an aggregation of persons rather than becoming a harmonious entity. Some of our false prophets, sometimes labeled as ’'psychiatrists," tell us that the child has his right to "self-expression" whereby he or she is following his or her own instincts to do or not^ to do what the parent advises. Thus it is the delusion of ' being modern. And instead of being trained, children are imposing their uncontrolled emotions upon parents, 'thus actually trying to train their elders. The teenager demands a car, firearms for sport and other needless things which tend to divert the young mind from the natural interests such as study and improving intellect and character, to hazardous ventures, sometimes resulting in tragedy. Some of these satisfied craving of children result in crimes. When the parent is called to the Police Station where the boy is held on a charge of murder with a weapon or having caused a serious accident with his' car, both parent and child face each other with a feeling of guilt at sudi moment, reflecting on past mutual failures. Delinquency in such instances was nurtured unwittingly by parents whb are convinced that they "love” their children. They fail to realize that love must be based on a higher ground than "giving in" to children at all times. Unless parental love recognizes responsibility at the same time, it is not love at all but rather the contributing cause of delinquency. Another, frequently heard explanation of delinquency is "bad company." In every instance, the parent subconsciously admits that he failed to keep company with the wayward child and let him associate with morally depraved children. It is the parent who should be responsible for character building by counseling their young ones rather than let them stray away from homeliving. Delinquent children are neglected and often much too pampered. And lastly, our laws need to be brought into line with present day requirements such as: enforcement of the criminal code, rather than encouragement to become a repeater. Politics of the basest type often blocks the execution of our laws. There should be no second and third juvenile offenders in America under our enlightened way of life. An example of political influence on crime was recently enacted in the Trenton area."Former magistrate Clifford Harbourt, having served successfully as advisor to the Police Department of Hamilton Township in Juvenile delinquency cases was dismissed from his post as a result of a new political line-up. The excuse given was: economy. Mr. Harbourt's pay was less than $2000 annually. Hamilton Township politicians it seems, do not value the intelligence of its citizens highly when they imagine that saving of $2000.00 and abolishing a much needed service in reducing delinquency as Mr. Harbourt had accomplished is a big deal. But politics, often follows strange paths. — And thereby contributing to growth of juvenile and parental delinquency. One of the answers seems to be to hold parents responsible for the sins ,of their children. Only thus will we behold the dawn of the day when teen-age hoodlums will disappear from the American scene. Our school system should inaugurate a real progressive way of educating the youth to become lawabiding, hard- working and respected citizens «of their community even ag their forefathers are known to have been in their days.
