LÁSZLÓ VINCE ABOUT THE NAMES OF DISTRICTS IN THE TOWN OF SZOLNOK The old, vanished geographical names and those existing today are important sources for the histories of settlements, and so of the town of Szolnok. In his study the author examines the names of districts and of two streets in Szolnok, from different points of view. His investigations are based on the names found in Frigyes Pesti's „Helységnévtár" (Gazetteer) (1864) and in the map of Szolnok from the year 1980. He particularly describes the alterations of names, the times of their origin and disappearance. Following the changes of district-names, „temporal layers" can be distinguished. The study reveals that, from among the nine district names originating from the 15—19th centuries, only one survived until today, and that is „Tabán". The paper explores the connections between the street „Büge river" and the brook „Büge", then between the „Lake-bottom" street and „Lake-bottom" brook. The author also examines these street-names etymologically and tries to find an explanation for their meaning. 359
