Its mission is to identify and promote the interests of the Hungarian-American community. Its goals are: • to foster appreciation of Hungary’s history and culture; • to encourage educational and cultural interaction between the people of the U.S. and Hungary; • to protect and preserve the human and minority rights and cultural heritage of Hungarians throughout the world; • and to support democratic institutions and economic development in Hungary. Education and Culture • Administers The White House Internship Program by Ameritech to Hungarian-American college students. (The submission deadlines for the summer and fall sessions are February 15 and June 23, 2000). • Promotes the anticipated satellite broadcasting of DUNA TV to North America. • Provides partial financial assistance to students pursuing studies in US colleges and universities (last year, in 1999, three students were from Hungary and one from Yugoslavia) through the Coalition Scholarship Fund. • Supports projects that benefit the Hungarian minorities in the neighboring countries. • Coordinates the Millenium celebrations by the member organizations of the Coalition. • Sponsored the Washington visit of László Jozsa, leader of the Hungarian minority of Vojvodina in December of 1999. This will be followed by a Conference focusing on the rights of the Hungarian minority in Vojvodina. • The Coalition organizes Political Action Workshops to prepare human rights activists. Information • Maintains an Information Office in Washington, DC. • Continues outreach to the executive and legislative branches of the US government. Provides information, participates in briefings, and holds regular meetings with government officials in the White House, Congress and the State Department.
