Bojtos László szavai a beiktatáson It is a great honor for the people of Ohio and Cleveland that Hungary is reestablishing the consulate here. Cleveland’s previous Hungarian consulate reopened after World War II on April 1st, 1948. Unfortunately, in February, 1949, when Cardinal Mindszenty was falsely convicted in Hungary, the staff resigned and with this the consulate ceased to exist in Cleveland. Today, I am sincerely humbled and honored for being appointed by the Republic of Hungary as Honorary Consul. I left Hungary in December, 1956, when the fight for freedom looked hopeless. Since then I have always tried to maintain relations with those people who never gave up the dream. The years through the late 1960’s were dominated by communist rule of revenge and terror. With the start of the 1970’s, we began to establish ties with individuals who pursued the spirit of survival and the hope for freedom. We invited them to give lectures throughout the United States and Canada. This was not a simple task. In Hungary, passports were not easily obtained as they were issued restrictively for specific purposes only. To show neutrality on the part of the inviter, we frequently asked universities to sponsor the guest for us. As we struggled to accomplish this through the communist bureaucracy, the real paradox was our difficulties with some of our own people out here who could not distinguish the oppressor from the oppressed. Nevertheless, it was a great and exciting challenge. My guest book records 82 signatures of participants between 1970 and 1989. Several of these guests have now become part of the new democratic government, and two are cabinet members. My present appointment, the honor of the consular status, binds me into a formal relationship with the free Republic of Hungary. I can assure you that my original heartfelt devotion persists. With this sincere feeling I hereby accept and welcome the new responsibilities and challenges of this position. □ Szavazzanak-e a külföldön élő magyarok?
