István Bibó (1911-1979), a Hungarian professor of political science, was one of the most profound social-political thinkers of Central Europe’s recent history. Writing his brilliant studies amidst adverse and dangerous war-torn conditions, foreign occupations, revolutions, imprisonments and dictatorships, he remained a painstakingly objective humanist. His analyses and theories utilize various methods of political science, history, law, sociology, psychology and economics. The present English-language volume, published on the eightieth anniversary of István Bibo’s birth, hopes to acquaint the reader with Bibó’s major studies at a time when East Central Europe is undergoing major political transformations. Bibó’s life work — this becomes obvious from his writings here — contributed to a significant extent to preparing his society for the contemporary revolutionary changes toward democracy and self-determination. From the Editor’s Foreword, by Károly Nagy, Professor of Sociology, Middlesex County College and Rutgers University. Out of hundreds of works from all over the world, the best and most authentic answers came from István Bibó, the most influential political thinker of 20th-century Hungary. From the Introduction by Géza Jeszenszky, Professor of History, Budapest University of Economics, Foreign Minister A great intellectual, a realistic idealist, addressing humanity’s greatest problems, who deserves to be studied in every country of the world. Professor Bernard Crick, University of London István Bibó was the most original and most perceptive political theorist of 20th Century Hungary. Bibó’s conception of politics was not something abstract, however. His particular concern was to look at concrete situations and to suggest solutions based on his analyses that were eminently realistic. Professor George Schöpflin, London School of Economics Bibó’s life work could have a fruitful impact on Western social sciences. It should be of interest to historians, political scientists, sociologists, students of Judaic studies, as well as to the educated public intent on learning more of modem European history.
