"Urban Turf and Ethnic Soul" deals with the identity crisis of an urban neighborhood in Toledo, Ohio. This 58-minute documentary profiles Birmingham in a state of transition and what it means in terms of community selfawareness and self-definition. Turf and soul are shorthand for neighborhood and community. The dualism of loyalty to community and neighborhood provides an opportunity to reflect on people's interaction with their physical environment. The documentary examines why the community and its culture are threatened. One of the leaders in the neighborhood provides the focus when he states the greatest challenge is "survival." This leads to reflections on the crisis of 74 and the community's confrontation with City Hall. The documentary examines how people in Birmingham have responded to the challenge of survival.
