HUNGARIAN STUDIES ANNUAL SUMMER PROGRAM Language • History • Culture June 15 - July 24, 1987 GENERAL INFORMATION From June 15 to July 24, 1987, an intensive six-week program in Hungarian Studies will be held on the campus of Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. It is the only concentrated summer Hungarian Studies program in the United States. It is Portland State University's special off-campus program which provides an exciting language learning opportunity as well as courses in the history, culture and society of Hungary and its East European neighbors. The program also includes an optional 7th week (July 26 to Aug. 1) of field research in the Hungarian-American "Birmingham" neighborhood of Toledo, Ohio. Whether you are a graduate student interested in language proficiency, a college student interested in a different way to expand your studies, or a person who would like to know more about an important part of the world, you can spend six to seven weeks experiencing the literature, history, folklore, politics and culture of Hungary. You will have ample opportunity to practice what you learn in the classroom. Oncampus activities will include special lectures by invited speakers and a weekly Hungarian movie. Social life and entertainment for the program participants include group tours to nearby points of interest, including excursions to Middle Bass Island on Lake Erie and to the Hungarian-American community in Toledo. Located within easy reach of most midwestern urban centers, Ada is close to the Old Lincoln Highway (Highway 30) and Interstate 75. The major Amtrak line connecting Chicago and New York also passes through Ada and stops in nearby Lima. Greyhound bus service to the nearby towns of Lima, Findlay and Kenton and airline service to Dayton, Columbus and Toledo are also available. COURSES A student can earn 9—16 quarter credit hours from Portland State University during the program. Course offerings include: 1) Beginning (12 credits), Intermediate (12 credits), and Advanced (9 credits) Hungarian: 2) History of the Hungarian People (2 credits): 3) Politics in East-Central Europe Since World War II (3 credits): 4) History of Hu rigaiján Literature (2 credits): 5) Twentieth-Century Hungarian Sociographic Literature (2 credits): 6) Hungarian Folklore (2 credits): 7) Field Research Project in the Toledo Hungarian-American Community (2 credits): 8) Seminar on National Minorities in Eastern Europe (2 credits). COSTS The tuition for the initial six weeks includes: $60 (registration fee) plus $45 per undergraduate credit hour or $60 per graduate credit hour. An additional $100 is payable by those who wish to participate in the 7th week of field research. A limited number of scholarships are available. Housing in university residence halls is available at a cost of $41 per week (double occupancy) of $62 per week (single occupancy). The cafeteria meal plan is available at $52 per week (21 meals).
