JUNE 6, 1984 Romania Rebels MAGYAR RÁDIÓ SZÜLŐFÖLDÜNK 1800 BUDAPEST TRUE to its maverick reputation, Romania has defied the Soviet Union and refused to join in the orchestrated boycott of the Olympic summer games in Los Angeles. President Nicolae Ceausescu, in a welcome gesture, made his country the only one of the Warsaw Pact to decline to follow Moscow’s lead. Life in Romania is no picnic. The country remains one of the most rigidly run and most poverty-stricken of the Sovietbloc countries, but that has not prevented Mr. Ceausescu from following an independent foreign policy since the 1960s. His was the first of the eastern European nations to recognize West Germany as well as the first to make economic arrangements with the European Common Market and the World Bank. The defection of Romania from the Soviet ranks will probably not make an appreciable difference in the effect of the boycott even though Romania traditionally fields some of the more competitive athletes, particularly in women’s gymnastics. But it does reflect the Romanian penchant for deviating from Russian edicts, and it stands in sharp contrast to the sheep-like way in which the other governments of the bloc fell dutifully into line in staying away from Los Angeles. There is a real question as to how long Romania can maintain its position of defiance of Soviet policies because of dire internal economic conditions and an increasing reluctance on the part of western bankers to put any more money into the Balkan nation. That could have the effect of forcing the Romanian government to realign its thinking to bring it closer to Moscow’s than in the past. If that happens, it will be unfortunate because Romania’s traditional feistiness has been a ray of brightness in the otherwise dull gray conformity of Kremlin country. 1984. május 21. Kedves Honfitársam! Amidta megtudtam, hogy sportolóink nem lehetnek ott az idei olimpiai játékokon, nem hagy nyugodni a gondolat, hogy mi ként nyújthatnánk legalább némi vigaszt a magyar színekért lelkesedő, s a Szülőföldünk olimpiai totópályázatára benevezett hallgatóinknak. Pályázatunk meghirdetése azt a jogos várakozást fejezte ki, hogy a körülmények lehetővé teszik majd csapatunk olimpiai jelenlétét, Ön pedig bízva csapatunk sikeres szereplésében játszótársunknak szegődött. Ez az optimizmus pedig ne menjen veszendőbe. Ha a magyar sportolók olimpiai szereplésének élményét nem tudjuk is pótolni, de némi vigaszt azért nyújthatunk. Külön vigaszdij-sorsolást tartunk minden Szülőföldünk olimpiai totószelvény részvételével, amely 1984. május 16-ig postára került. Kérem Önt, kedves Honfitársam, figyelje adásainkat, ahol beszámolunk a sorsolás eredményéről. A nyertesek pedig figyelők a postást, a nyereményeket postai úton küldjük el. Még egyszer megköszönöm, hogy lelkesedését a magyar színekért, a magyar sportért a totcfezelvény kitöltésével is kifejezésre juttatta, s azzal zárom soraimat, hogy a mostani sajnálatos eset után lesz még alkalmunk olimpiai és más világversenyeken szurkolni a magyarokért.
