king, János Zsigxnond, who alone among the rulers of 16th century Europe had the personal courage to declare: "I want that there be freedom in my realm." It is a pity that many of the gains made in his time were partially lost later, when new political constellations brought about new developments in the life of Transylvania’s churches. But the gains were never completely lost. In spite of setbacks, it was the Transylvanian heritage that made all of Hungary eventually the free st country on the European continent from a religious standpoint, well into the 20th century. And it is my personal opinion that it is the contunuation of this same spirit and heritage that makes the newly imposed, Marxistic-Leninistic religion far less rigid and dogmatic in present-day Hungary than it is in the rest of the communist world.- Forrásmunkák • J .
