Munkatársunk, Éltető J. Lajos kinevezést kapott a Portland State University (Portland, Oregon) magyar nyelvosztályának a vezetésére. Működését 1970 szeptemberében kezdi meg.

A portlandi egyetem kiváló programját figyelmébe ajánljuk minden fiatal magyarnak, aki egyetemre készül vagy esetleg már egyetemista. Az egyetem középeurópai kurzusa összeegyeztethető majdnem bármilyen szakképesitéssel^(ma jor-ra'l) , s emellett sok pályához megadja a specializált előkészítést. A program rövid angol nyelvű ismertetője a következő;

Portland State University offers an integrated program of studies in the languages and area of Central Europe. This program is based on the recognition that, despite the geo-political realities of Soviet power, this- important area, including Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia and other neighboring nations, essentially constitutes the eastern extremity of West European civilization. The Center, therefore, focuses on the fundamental, complex relationships--linguistic, historical, political and economic—between the Germanic peoples (Germany and Austria), and the Western and Southern Slavs (Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia); and Hungary.

The Center does not grant degrees but confers a Certificate in Central European Studies upon the student's completion of specified work while satisfying normal requirements for a bachelor's degree, with a departmental major. To earn a certificate, students must complete the Center's language and other course requirements and meet the University's requirements for graduation. Certificate holders are qualified for employment in government agencies, business organizations or educational institutions, or may pursue specialized training in graduate schools at major universities.

Certificate -arid..B.A. decree requirements; l) a major in any of the academic fields /45 hrs/, 2) General University graduation requirements /33 hrs/, 3) Required area courses, as described in the Portland State University Undergraduate Catalog; General Anthropology /3 hrs/, Peoples and Cultures of Central Europe /3 hrs/, Outlines of Economics /3 hrs/, Economic Problems of Central Europe /3 hrs/, Comparative Economic Systems /.3 hrs/, Introductory Geography /3 hrs/ Geography of Central Europe/ 3 hrs/, Geography of the Soviet Union /3 hrs/, World Politics /6 hrs/, Communist Governments /3 hrs/, History of Modern Germany, Russia, Eastern Europe or the Habsburg Empire /comb. 9 hrs/, 4) three years of one of the following languages: Czech, Hungarian, Polisz or Serbo- Croatian /33 hrs/, Electives (2 years of German recommended)

/33 hrs/. Total: 186 quarte hours.

Az egyetem programja egyedülálló az Egyesült Államokban. Már a neve is elárulja (Central és nem East European Studies), hogy radikálisan eltér egész koncepciójában a többi hasonló programtól, amennyiben a hangsúlyt nem a Szovjet Unióra, hanem a középeurópai nemzetek kulturközösségére fekteti, s azoknak a nyugati mivoltára.
