TO HUNGARIAN SUMEROLOGISTS (In response to Sujtár Elemér's Article) Although there is no evidence (besides a remote lin­guistic, structural similarity of Hungarian wiJth Sumerian-­­which is also true of Turkish, Finnish, and several minor Ural Altaic and Caucasian languages) to support the state­ment that the Hungarians are "a sumir kultúra tovább­vivő je," any refutation of this allegation, based on his­torical proof would, judging from Sujtár Elemér*s article, no doubt be disregarded by its Hungarian proponents. Suj­tár seems to imply that the Hungarians should believe in a myth he admits they are (rather glibly) manufacturing, for the sake of expediency. However, setting aside for the moment what the art­icle seems to imply, a few suggestions and comments are in order. That their premise is impossible to prove conclus­ively on the basis of material now available--except pos­sibly to those who are not really seeking the truth—would seem to indicate that new research and discoveries on the part of Hungarian "Sumerologists" is required. To prove their Sumerian lineage they must undertake what no one else has done--to trace the precise history of wandering tribes. This would necessitate not only their "familiarization with Sumerian culture," but also with that of all the peoples with which they as "Sumerians," and then as Hungarians are likely to have come into contact. Their linguistic studies should include Turkish and the Turkic languages such as 22
