MISCELLANEOUS Hungarian Studies at Columbia University The East Central European Center at Columbia University now offers an expanded program in Hungarian Studies. It includes three years of language instruction, courses in Hungarian literature and history and fellowship support for student research and living expenses. The program is supervised by Professor István Deák. During the past academic year the Center was able to provide support for a highly successful Hungarian-American Educators’ Association Conference in April 1998. It also provided modest funding for student research; brought Hungarian scholars to New York City for professional meetings and funded course offerings by Carol Rounds and Ivan Sanders. For additional information visit the Hungarian Studies website: http://www.columbia.edu/ cu/sipa/regional/ece/homepage.html. White House Internships The Hungarian American Coalition is continuing its program of screening and sponsoring Hungarian-American college students for White House Internships. These Internships are supported by funding received from Ameritech. It has enabled the Coalition to help place 11 Hungarian-American interns at the White House during the past four years. The Internships are either for the fall or spring semester or for the briefer summer sessions. Graduate students, recent graduates or college students in their junior or senior years are encouraged to apply for these internships. Important criteria for selection are academic achievement and a record of community service in Hungarian American organizations or institutions.
