Participating in the ceremonies were Governor Thomas Kean of New Jersey and other dignitaries including representatives of several universities. The event was part of the opening program of the annual Hungarian Festival in New Brunswick, which also marked the 30th anniversary year of the Foundation. With the placing of the cornerstone of the building, construction on the Hungarian Center is underway. Early in the year, those portions of the existing building known as “the Needle Factory” not included in the architectual design were demolished to prepare for the renovation and construction. “The Needle Factory” property was purchased in 1980 by the American Hungarian Foundation. The renovation and construction will blend traditional Hungarian architecture with the structure in architect László Papp’s design. Included in the Hungarian Heritage Center are the museum, library, archives, research and conference facilities and a community room. To complete the Center, a total of $2.9 million in Capital and Endownment Funds are needed to construct and maintain the facility. The fund raising campaign is successfully underway and to date $650,000 has been pledged and raised. The Foundation’s library with some 30,000 volumes, as an Affiliate Library of Rutgers-The State University of New Jersey, is in the process of being integrated into RLIN (Research Libraries Information Network), the nationwide computer network of America’s leading university libraries and other research institutions. Supporting this process of affiliation, the New Jersey Committee for the Humanities awarded the American Hungarian Foundation a grant.
