O Ä From the Editor THOUGHTS ABOUT MARCH AND "OPERATION DESERT STORM" For most Hungarians around the world, the month of March is commemorative in that they gather together to remember the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848-1849, and to pay homage to its heroes, Louis Kossuth, Alexander (Sándor) Petőfi, and others. This is as it should be, because this tragic episode in the history of Hungary is one among many others like it which exemplifies the nation's centuries long struggle for freedom and independence, and which is finally on-the-brink of being achieved. There are, of course, many other happenings in Hungarian history which have anniversaries this month worthy of remembrance. But, above and beyond these, there are two of more recent times that should be kept in mind this month. One of these is that, for the very first time, Hungary was on the right side in "Operation Desert Storm" of the Persian Gulf War by sending a medical team to Saudi Arabia. This was, and is, a gesture of support that is not likely to be forgotton by the Coalition of Nations in general and by the United States of America in particular! The second "episode" worthy of remembrance this month is that many American-born citizens of Hungarian descent, both men and women, served with the Armed Forces of the United States of America in "Operation Desert Storm", and everyone of them deserves our salute and thanks as we participate in solemn observances of the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848-1849!
