INC AMERICAN IMMIGRANT WALL OF HONOR FACT SHEET The Ellis Island American Immigrant Wall of Honor is a wall of inscribed names that honors American’s immigrants who came to this country pursuing dreams of freedom, opportunity and prosperity. The Wall of Honor offers all Americans the chance to honor their family heritage and pay tribute to their immigrant ancestors, regardless of when they immigrated. Ellis Island is a fitting place for this tribute because, today, at least 100 million Americans - 40 percent of the nation’s population - descend from the millions of immigrants who first came to America through Eliis Island. The AMERICAN IMMIGRANT WALL OF HONOR has received a tremendous response from people across the country. Registration was closed in the fall of 1989 in order to process and engrave the nearly 200,000 names submitted so that the Wall could be built for Ellis Island’s reopening. Since that deadline, however, thousands of Americans have requested to include their families’ names on the Wall of Honor. The overwhelming interest prompted The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation to establish a new section of the Wall — the Centennial Edition. The Centennial Edition of The American Immigrant Wall of Honor, which will be completed in time for Ellis Island’s Centennial in 1992. It again offers all Americans the opportunity to have the names of their forefathers inscribed at a national monument, thereby gaining a permanent place in history for their family at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum.
