C3 Letters-to-the-Editor Dear Mr Pulitzer, Enclosed is my contribution to the HHR Benefit Fund. I appreciate the opportunity to further the development of our common Hungarian heritage here in the “New World”, and I congratulate you for undertaking this venture. Now, I’d like to give you and your many readers another opportunity to donate to an exceptionally worthy cause, one that will very directly help our brothers and sisters back in the “Old Country”, Hungary. Back in December, one of the networks (ABC, I think) had a short news segment on the return of the Salvation Army to Hungary. Active until shortly after World War II, it had gone underground and lain pretty much dormant until the fateful year of 1990. Under the leadership of Salvation Army Major Victor R. Doughty and his Hungarian-born wife, Lillian (Vegso), the Army is trying to get fully reestablished in Hungary, offering many services to the countless people in dire need there. Just one immediate example is making funds available to buy 500 sleeping bags for the homeless in Budapest, not to mention the many refugees from Romania’s Transylvania (Erdély). The video scenes of the Doughtys working with octogenarian veterans of the Salvation Army, inactive since 1949, brought a lump to my throat and a great personal yearning to help. To find out how I could aid this worthy mission, I called Mr Dean B. Seiler, the Executive Director of the Salvation Army World Service Office. He has since sent me some pertinent literature which I have copied and enclosed for your information. He said monetary contributions would be the most welcome and powerful way to help this renewed mission that will greatly benefit the people of the land of our ancestry. He further assured me that, if clearly designated for the Hungarian mission, 100% of the donations will go directly to Maj and Mrs Doughty to build up their ability to better perform their humanitarian services. He will also be pleased to issue receipts for charitable tax deduction purposes. We all know the valuable work done by the Salvation Army here in the United States and Canada. Now, we have a chance to see this same sort of work done in Hungary. Please get behind this effort and publicize it widely. Contributions should be made to the “Salvation Army” and designated for the “Hungarian mission,” and mailed to: Salvation Army World Service Office ATTN: Mr Dean B. Seiler, Executive Director 1025 Vermont Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20005 (Tel: 202-737-3330) Thank you for your continuing good work in keeping our Hungarian heritage alive and well. Paul S.
